Valstrona

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,268 · Postal code: 28897

Valstrona is not a village but a whole valley inside one comune. In 1927 every small municipality of the Val Strona was abolished and merged, with the seat at Strona; in 1929 Campello Monti joined too, an old Walser colony long dependent on Rimella, which passed then from the province of Vercelli to that of Novara. After the war Germagno, Loreglia and Massiola became separate comuni again.

Woodcarving and wood-turning began at Fornero, the valley's trade. At Forno, beside the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo — white front, clock tower, a stone fountain before it — a museum keeps paintings, vestments and objects from the countries the valley's men emigrated to, many of them pewter workers.
