Cossogno

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 588 · Postal code: 28801

Cossogno holds an almost wholly mountainous territory that runs into the Val Grande National Park; its innermost part is the Pedum integral nature reserve. The first documents naming it come from the middle of the twelfth century and record a community with its own church of San Brizio; for centuries the village lay under the lordship of the Moriggia.

What it is remembered for is recent instead: in 1892 the industrialist Carlo Sutermeister had the world's first commercial alternating-current power line built between Cossogno and Intra, to a design by Galileo Ferraris, and it still works. In 2018 a referendum on merging with Verbania fell short of the quorum.
