Borgo d'Ale

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,588 · Postal code: 13040

The town was assembled out of four neighbouring villages, Erbario, Clivolo, Meoglio and Areglio, the largest, and took its name from the village next door: Borgus Alicus. Not everyone approved: when the Ghibelline counts of Cavaglià rose against the chapter of Vercelli in 1243, the abbot of Sant'Andrea urged people to move instead to Alice Castello, loyal to the papacy.

Areglio fared badly: in 1417 Amedeo VIII of Savoy had it pulled down to punish its rebellious lord, and Borgo d'Ale grew from then on. Of the flattened village the walls of its eleventh-century church remain, still called la Gesiassa, the big church. The parish church in the centre is by Bernardo Antonio Vittone.
