Borgomasino

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 835 · Postal code: 10031

Borgomasino, Burgre in Piedmontese and Bulgarum in Latin documents, is a village in the Canavese. The castle was built by the counts of Pombia and later passed to the Valperga: the municipal arms come from that family's blazon, with a few changes.

Of the old building the square brick tower survives, with irregular openings and worked terracotta under the roof; a collapse damaged it in 1818, and on its remains, in 1870, count Cesare Valperga di Masino, then mayor of Turin, had a villa built. There is also the Pera cunca, an erratic boulder with a central hollow and small side cups, which some sources say served pagan rites.
