Saint Emilian, patron of the town on the Po river belt
📅 Every year, on 10 September
Cigliano celebrates Saint Emilian on 10 September, in the church dedicated to him.
The Roman name was Cisuliacum, and it said where the place stood: on this side — cis — of Uliacum, an old settlement that has since vanished. It is first found in writing in the diploma of Charles the Fat of 882, among the lands returned to the bishop of Vercelli: Curtis de Cisiliano.
Through the Middle Ages the people of Cigliano always refused to be enfeoffed, and paid heavy tributes to stay free. In the mid seventeenth century they also refused to supply the Spanish besieging the nearby castle of Moncrivello: in reprisal the commander Sandoval had the whole town destroyed, fortifications and all. Only the churches survived, which is why so little of the medieval town is left.
