Maglione

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 468 · Postal code: 10030

Maglione sits on the south-eastern rim of the morainic amphitheatre, bordering the province of Vercelli, on a rise above the morainic ponds. The name appears in the tenth century as Castro Malione: some derive it from maglio, Latin Malleum, hammer; Du Cange from Malhones, vines, and the vines remain, giving Erbaluce.

The first record is a donation deed of 999, from Otto III to the bishop of Vercelli. Of the castle destroyed in 1650 only the square tower stands, now the cemetery belfry. In the old centre the Palazzo comunale opens four brick arches under a painted dial; since 1985, on an idea of the director Maurizio Corgnati, house walls carry contemporary art.
