Villarboit

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 465 · Postal code: 13030

The name begins with the Latin villaris, “belonging to a farm estate”, later to a village; the second half, Boit, may come from a family name, perhaps Boctus. Villarboit sits on the Vercelli plain, the Rovasenda stream alongside it, rice fields all around and lone farmsteads among them.

Not far off runs the Cavour canal, which crosses the Rovasenda and the Marchiazza on two aqueduct bridges. The village once lay under the jurisdiction of Monformoso, today just a farmstead; above the roofs stands the castle, brick-built, its tower topped by a small arcaded loggia. The coat of arms carries a golden bell and two uprooted rice plants side by side.
