Livorno Ferraris

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,450 · Postal code: 13046

The town was called Livorno Piemonte, and its present name came from a royal decree of 1924, in homage to Galileo Ferraris, the scientist born here. The older name is traced back to the Libui, the Ligurian people who came down from southern France into the Vercelli plain some centuries before Christ.

Between 1936 and 1938 Livorno Ferraris was a staging post for Jews leaving Germany for Palestine: on a farm nearby, run by the Zionist organisation Hechaluz together with the Jewish community of Vercelli, they learned the farming skills they would need in the new land. At the end of August 1938, shortly before the racial laws, the press attacked the farm hard and the experiment ended.
