Feast of Saints Quirico and Giulitta
📅 Every year, on the third Sunday of July
On the third Sunday of July Greggio, a municipality of 382 inhabitants in the province of Vercelli, celebrates its patron saints Quirico and Giulitta.
The name seems to come from the Latin gregius, 'rough, unworked', perhaps for land left untilled; the coat of arms shows three golden ears of rice over a wavy silver band. Part of the town lies in the Lame del Sesia nature park.
In Roman times the via delle Gallie passed here, the consular road Augustus built to link the Po plain with Gaul. A diploma of Otto III, dated 999, lists it under the abbey of Santi Nazario e Celso, which built the first castle here. In 1223 Milan's podestà, Mercurino Pace, ordered the defences torn down; the bell tower and the monastery were spared thanks to the marquis Manfredo II Lancia.
