Oldenico

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 252 · Postal code: 13030

The arms of Oldenico sum the place up: seven silver rice ears on blue, the name ODINICUM in capitals above, and below a lowered pall, the Y-shaped figure, silver and wavy blue. The rice is that of the Vercelli plain around the village, and part of the municipal territory lies in the Lame del Sesia nature park; the water is that of the three courses that close the village almost into a peninsula, the Sesia, the Cervo and the Marchiazza.

That position between rivers counted. Oldenico was granted to the Church of Vercelli by a diploma of Frederick Barbarossa in 1152, then passed to the counts of Biandrate and came under the commune of Vercelli, which contested control of the Sesia with Novara. Of the Biandrate castle there remain the inner courtyard, a stretch of the outer wall and the front, which still shows its early stone masonry.
