Pertengo

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 321 · Postal code: 13030

The arms of Pertengo are quarterly and gather the marks of those who held the place, among them the Tizzoni blazon: the second quarter carries three black brands enflamed red, bendwise one above the other. The Tizzoni built a country residence here in the seventeenth century; nothing of it survives. Below the shield, on a forked silver scroll, runs the motto Pro Te Teneo.

The village ties the origin of its name to that motto; another reading takes Pertengo to mean «property of Pert». The name appears in a document of 1152 by which Frederick Barbarossa granted the territory to the bishops of Vercelli, though the site was settled long before: Roman finds came to light at the end of the nineteenth century, among them a votive bronze now in the Museo Leone at Vercelli.
