Desana

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,055 · Postal code: 13034

In the fields between Desana and Trino, in the remains of a late Roman villa, came to light the treasure that carries the village name: fifty-one pieces of gold, silver and precious stones, buckles and dress fittings for men and women. A material trace of Ostrogothic Italian goldsmithing and of the élite who wore it.

From 1510 to 1693 Desana was a county, an imperial fief of the Tizzoni, with its own mint. The bishops of Vercelli had raised the castle to guard their land, and Arduin, margrave of Ivrea, took it from them; nothing of the medieval shape survives, because in 1840 Vitale Rosazza, a notary and businessman from Biella, rebuilt it from scratch.
