Giovinazzo

Province: Bari · Region: Puglia · Population: 20,433 · Postal code: 70054

Giovinazzo's old town occupies a small peninsula wrapped around its harbour: white houses sheer above the water, alleys spilling onto the sea, and a Romanesque co-cathedral consecrated in 1113 watching over it all. It is one of the most photogenic seafaring centres on the Bari coast, and miraculously still off the busiest routes.

The town of 20,433, twelve kilometres north of Bari, also hides a prehistoric surprise: the San Silvestro dolmen in its countryside, among the best preserved in Puglia. A sunset aperitivo on the harbour, fishing boats gliding home, repays the detour from the state road on its own.
