Read more →Three cities share the job of provincial capital here — Barletta, Andria and Trani all lend their names to it, though Andria was made the seat of government in 2010. The province is one of Italy's youngest: decided in 2004, it only started working in 2009, assembled from ten towns previously governed from Bari and Foggia. It covers the northern stretch of Apulia's Adriatic coast and the farmland that climbs inland behind it.
The main draw is inland rather than on the water. Castel del Monte, the octagonal castle Frederick II raised on a hill above Andria, draws most visitors. The coast is a different register: Trani, where the cathedral stands right at the water's edge; the harbour at Barletta; Bisceglie. Further in, Canosa di Puglia stacks up layers from one of the oldest settled sites in the region.
