After the catastrophic defeat at Cannae, fleeing Roman soldiers sought refuge along the Ofanto River in Canosa di Puglia. Centuries later, this same settlement became the resting place of Bohemond I of Antioch. Because of this historical density, the ancient Roman Canusium remains Apulia’s premier archaeological hub.
