The patron of Mattinata is Santa Maria della Luce, celebrated from 14 to 16 September: the feast opens on the morning of the 14th with fireworks, the ringing of bells and the town band parading through the streets.
She was celebrated for the first time on 16 September 1894, in homage for the protection received after the long, strong earthquakes that struck Mattinata between 1892 and 1894; on the last day her painting is carried in procession together with the statues of Saint Anthony and Saint Michael the Archangel, and the feast closes in the evening with fireworks.
