On 19 May 1478, below the castle of Macomer, Leonardo Alagon, marquis of Oristano, faced the viceroy Nicolò Carroz and lost. With that defeat the last Sardinian state still resisting the Aragonese came to an end, and Alagon went to die a prisoner in Spain, in the castle of Xàtiva. Three centuries later, in 1795, Giovanni Maria Angioy arrived here with five hundred horsemen looking for the support of the people: the town rose against him instead, and his men broke in and sacked the church of San Pantaleo. Macomer is the place where Sardinian self-rule was first lost and then refused.

The reason for so much attention lies in geography: perched at 563 metres on the basalt banks of the rio S'Adde, at the foot of the Marghine, it has always been the obligatory passage between the north and the south of the island, and what the Romans left here above all were milestones. Long before them there had been others: the complex of Santa Barbara, that of Tamuli with its giants' tombs and six betyls, and above all the Venus of Macomer, a Mother Goddess fourteen centimetres high carved in local basalt, found in 1949 in a cave in the gorge of the rio S'Adde and kept today in Cagliari.
