Feast of Nostra Signora di Corte
📅 Every year, on 8 September
On 8 September Sindia, a municipality of 1,811 inhabitants in the province of Nuoro, celebrates its patroness Nostra Signora di Corte (Our Lady of Corte).
Sindia exists because a judge, on his way home from the Holy Land, met Bernard of Clairvaux. The judge was Gonario of Torres, and from that meeting came the donation to the Cistercians of the farm estate of Capuabbas: the monks arrived, built the church of San Pietro and set up a grange, that is a monastic farm with its servants. Around the year 1150 the people scattered across a dozen small settlements — Muristevene, Corizanas, Campeda, Solomo, Sant'Albara and the rest — left their dry-stone huts and gathered there, drawn by the work the grange provided. The town of today is that gathering. Of the abbey of Nostra Signora di Corte, or of Cabuabbas, the walls remain; the name of the town, on the other hand, is pre-Roman and nobody knows what it meant.
On the ninth of January 1388 the representatives of Sindia went to the church at Magomadas, where the corona of the curatoria met to sign the peace between Eleonora's kingdom of Arborea and the crown of Aragon. At the end of the eighteenth century the town took sides against its own feudal lords, and Giommaria Angioy, protected by the inhabitants, spent a night in the camp of his most loyal followers in the wood of Matta Sindia. Then the town went on choosing: a decree of 1927 took it from the province of Cagliari and gave it to that of Nuoro; in 2004, when the Planargia chose to move to Oristano, Sindia decided to stay where it was, parting after centuries from the historical region it belonged to. And in 2010 the town council resolved how its own name is written in Sardinian, accent included.
