Abbasanta

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,828 · Postal code: 09071

Abbasanta has 2,828 inhabitants on the plateau that carries its name, and the name means simply "holy water". For centuries the village had no baron: together with Paulilatino it was a royal fief, administered directly by officials of the Crown and not by a feudal lord, and it was redeemed to the state in the nineteenth century; only one piece of the territory, the Montagna Reale, was a separate fief for a few decades. As a comune, on the other hand, it has been taken apart and put back together: suppressed in 1927 and merged into Ghilarza, re-established in 1934, and in 1946 it lost Norbello, which became a comune of its own.

The coat of arms was changed very recently, and the change is the interesting part. Until 2020 it showed a cork oak between two towers, the generic towers of heraldry; the new one, granted in 2020, keeps the oak and in place of the towers puts the Nuraghe Losa, which stands in the comune's territory and is one of the most important in Sardinia. The other surprise is contemporary: a village of this size houses the State Police training centre for escort and security duties, where foreign police forces have also been trained, and a helicopter-borne carabinieri squadron.
