Feast of Saints Julitta and Quiricus
📅 Every year, on 15 July
On 15 July Norbello, a municipality of 1,178 inhabitants in the province of Oristano, celebrates its patrons Saints Julitta and Quiricus (santi Giulitta e Quirico).
Eight kilometres from the village, beyond the main road, stands a novenary built around the church of Sant'Ignazio da Laconi and inaugurated in 1952: it is the first church ever raised and dedicated to the Capuchin saint. A village of little more than a thousand people in the Guilcer, that is, moved first. In the centre, on the other hand, the oldest church is Santa Maria, now dedicated to the Madonna della Mercede, which keeps wall inscriptions and consecration crosses from the end of the twelfth century — the signatures, that is, of the day a church is consecrated, left on the wall for eight hundred years.
Norbello, after all, is a village that names things. The Square of Women is also Piazza Otto Marzo, and there stands Luigi Taras's statue called Emancipazione 90; by the same artist is Crisalide '88, of 1988; and the war memorial, made in 2002 in the public garden, is dedicated to the soldiers and to the victims of all wars, that is to those who fought and to those who suffered them. The village name too is a decision taken at a desk: by royal decree of 21 December 1862, published on 8 February 1863, the old Norghiddo became Norbello — but in Sardinian people still say Norghìddo. In the territory, on the basalt tableland, 38 archaeological sites are recorded, among nuraghi, domus de janas, giants' tombs and a dolmen; and the village's sports club, unusually, is a table tennis one.
