Catalan is still spoken here: l'Alguer was repopulated in the fourteenth century by Catalans of the Crown of Aragon, and the language has survived six centuries along with the street names. Inside the sea bastions, the centre is a weave of golden lanes; the wall-top promenade at sunset, facing Capo Caccia, is the daily ritual of the Coral Riviera.
Red coral, fished in these waters since antiquity, fills the goldsmiths' shops. By boat — or down the 654 steps of the Cabirol stairway — you reach Neptune's Grotto; to the north, the Maria Pia and Bombarde beaches complete the picture.
