Ittiri

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 8,868 · Postal code: 07044

On the coat of arms of Ittiri, taken from an ancient seal, it is written that the town was born from two monasteries: Sancta Maria de Paulis et Choro sedes et origo, the abbey of Santa Maria di Paulis and the hermitage of Coros are its seat and origin. Both are Cistercian and both still stand out in the countryside: Paulis is an abbey of 1205, Coros a church of the first half of the thirteenth century that depended on it. The arms also carry marsh reeds, because the place was called Cannedu and in Sardinian it is still Ìtiri Cannédu, and a bearded man standing on a tower with a staff and a closed book: some see in him a pilgrim, others the judge who brought the Cistercians into Sardinia.

The churches of Ittiri also tell two stories of moving. Until 1935, where the town hall stands today, there was Santa Croce, and that church was the centre of a cross whose four ends were the other churches of the town. And San Leonardo al Cuga, of the twelfth century, stood beside a village called Thuca that had already disappeared in the fifteenth: when the Cuga reservoir was built in the nineteen sixties the church was taken apart stone by stone and raised again further up the slope, to save it from the water that now covers the village. The town has a hard history behind it: the plague of 1657 cost it about two thousand people.
