Bonorva

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 3,669 · Postal code: 07012

Bonorva has 3,669 inhabitants in the Logudoro, on the slope between the Campeda plateau and the plain of Santa Lucia. Giovanni Spano called it the Sardinian Siena, for the purity of the Logudorese that is spoken here. About ten kilometres from the village is the necropolis of Sant'Andrea Priu, a funerary complex of twenty domus de janas cut into the rock; and the chief town of the curatoria, originally, was not Bonorva but Rebeccu, which today is one of its hamlets.

In 1347, on the plain of Aidu de Turdu, the Doria clashed with the Aragonese of Guglielmo di Cervellon: the Aragonese lost, but they took the territory anyway not long after. Another village of the district, Terchiddo, was abandoned completely in 1665. Today Bonorva is known for two things made by hand: the carpets and tapestries woven on horizontal looms, and the zichi bread, which has its own August fair in the village and even a monument, the work of Giuseppe Carta.
