Feast of Saint Clare
📅 Every year, on 11 August
On 11 August Cossoine, a municipality of 900 inhabitants in the province of Sassari, celebrates its patroness Saint Clare (santa Chiara).
In Sardinia the canto a tenore is a men's affair; at Cossoine, several historical sources say, there was also a women's tradition. It has been lost, and for more than a century. The name comes from Corsein, then Cossein, and some trace it to cossu, the Corsican: the surname Unali is very common here, and it comes from Gunale, a curatoria of Gallura historically settled by Corsican tribes.
Until the nineteenth century these mountains were woods and these valleys marshes, the wildest place in the Sassari country and a refuge for bandits: the Cabizza brothers were from here. Then, to build the railway, almost all the trees were cut, and with no wood the bandits never came back: Cossoine stayed clear even of the kidnapping years.
