Pozzomaggiore

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,717 · Postal code: 07018

The land here is volcanic and full of worked stone: forty nuraghi stand in this territory alone, another thirty-eight at Padria and seventeen at Mara, a density that has never been properly studied. On the border, over the rio Mannu, the Roman Ponte Oinu still holds, built to link the Campeda plateau with the village of Gurulis Vetus, today's Padria. The church of San Giorgio Martire is late Catalan Gothic: at the top of the facade the saint is carved in pale stone, and the dragon under his feet in dark trachyte, the rock of the place.

The other important church was born of a promise: the survivors of the First World War made a vow, and between 1920 and 1923 they built the church of San Costantino, the emperor venerated in Sardinia as a saint. It is there that the Ardia is run, the horse race of the July and late-August feasts. The village had already shown it could take a side: in 1795, when Giovanni Maria Angioy raised the Sardinians against the feudal lords, Pozzomaggiore stood against the barons; the fief itself was bought back from the Amat di San Filippo in 1839.
