Semestene

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 171 · Postal code: 07010

Just outside the village stands the Romanesque church of San Nicola di Trullas, raised between the end of the eleventh century and the start of the twelfth and frescoed inside. A deed of 1113 gave it to the Camaldolese, who kept a monastery there: it was in that house that the condaghe of San Nicola di Trullas was compiled, the register in which the convent's transfers of property were recorded. Abandoned in the second half of the fourteenth century, the monastery has been partly brought back to light by recent excavations.

Semestene was the centre of a scolca, the district watched over by sworn guards: their lookout was the nuraghe de Iscolca, from which the eye reaches from the sea at Bosa to the hills of Villanova Monteleone. The villages around it all vanished before 1388, amid famine, plague and war, and their people took refuge here. In 1796, on the slope of Andròliga, the village rector welcomed Giovanni Maria Angioy on his march towards Sassari.
