Romana

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 578 · Postal code: 07010

At Romana water is the oldest thing: the spring of Abbarghente has been used since the Nuragic age, then by the Punics and the Romans, and votive statues have been found nearby, left by those who had been cured by drinking it. The coat of arms too, granted in 1964, recalls this origin as a religious centre tied to the springs.

Above one of those springs stands the church of San Lussorio, built at the mouth of a cave: tradition says the saint, venerated all over Sardinia, lived there seven years as a hermit. In the village remains the small Romanesque church of Santa Croce, and in the countryside the domus de janas of Monte Airadu and the Inghiltidolzu cave. The fief, held by the Brunengo, was redeemed in 1839.
