Osilo

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 3,204 · Postal code: 07033

Osilo has 3,204 inhabitants at 672 metres on Monte Tuffudesu, and is one of the highest villages in its province. It has thirty-six churches: the one of Nostra Signora di Bonaria stands on the highest hill, and from up there, when the air is clear, you can see for more than a hundred kilometres, as far as the Asinara and Corsica. What Osilo is known for outside Sardinia, though, is its pecorino, one of only three Sardinian cheeses admitted to the Slow Food presidia: it is made by some two hundred and fifty farms, nearly all of them family-run.

On the mountain there is also the Malaspina castle, which in the fourteenth century changed hands continuously: ceded to the Aragonese, fought over by the same Malaspina who took it back by force, sold to the Doria in 1345, retaken by the king, occupied by the judge of Arborea Mariano IV and then by the giudicessa Eleonora, and seized again by the Aragonese in 1392. A document of that century says who was inside it: a castellan, fourteen servants, one guard and a doorman. Down in the village there were a hundred and fifty men able to bear arms.

The Immaculate Conception and the Ring-Tilting Race

📅 Every year, on 8 December; the Ring-Tilting Race on 12 August

Osilo celebrates the Immaculate Conception on 8 December. On 12 August, the Corsa all'anello is held, a very popular horseback skill competition, not to be confused with the Sartiglia.
