Oschiri has 3,436 inhabitants at the foot of Monte Limbara, and in its territory there is a monument nobody can explain: the rock altar of Santo Stefano, a granite face in which someone carved geometric niches, triangles and squares. It is not known when it was made, nor what it was for: the argument is still going on.
Just outside the village is the church of Nostra Signora di Castro, which was once a cathedral: from 1116 to 1503 Oschiri was a bishop's seat, and the diocese took its name from a town, Castro, which has since disappeared. But the thing people here are proudest of is something you eat: the panadas, pastry baskets filled with meat, which have their own fair in mid-August. The name and the shape are too close to the Argentine empanada and the Portuguese empada for it to be chance: the kinship with Iberian cooking is there, and it is old.
