The fief was called Miccichè, from the Arabic Michiken, black earth. When don Nicolò Palmieri bought it in 1751 and began to settle it, he gave it the name Villalba — white town — after the Galician town his ancestors came from.
It grew fast: eight hundred inhabitants in 1785, almost two thousand thirty years later. The Palmieri held it for a hundred and forty-one years, then in 1892 sold it to the Florio. It stands at 620 metres, on the slopes of Monte Pirtusiddu, among olives and vines; here they grow the siccagnu tomato, which has its own summer sagra, and the Villalba lentil. There are 1,731 residents.
