The patroness of Mussomeli is Mary Most Holy of Miracles, venerated on 8 and 15 September each year. The sanctuary dedicated to her, commonly called the church of the Madonna dei Miracoli, was founded by Father Francesco Langela, from one of the town's noblest and most powerful families; the adjoining cloister was built shortly after by his nephew, friar Nicola Langela.
In 1370 Manfredi di Chiaramonte inaugurated the Manfredonico Castle, in Gothic-Norman style, which rises on a crag up to 778 metres and is for this reason nicknamed the «eagle's nest»; the town's coat of arms still bears the three towers of the noble Castellar baronial family, whose emblem was a silver, tower-crowned castle, and bees alluding to the place name Mons mellis, «Mountain of Honey», the ancient name of the area where Mussomeli stands.
