A navel halfway between Bologna and Modena

Bologna and Modena have argued for centuries over who invented the tortellino, and legend found the most diplomatic answer available: the innkeeper who peeked through a keyhole at the goddess Venus and copied her navel in pasta worked at the Corona inn in Castelfranco Emilia, the town on the Via Emilia road exactly halfway between the two rivals, in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. The official filling recipe, though, was deposited in 1974 at the Bologna Chamber of Commerce. The argument goes on.

Impossible geography

The Italian village cars cannot reach

Chamois, perched at 1,818 metres in the Aosta Valley in Italy's alpine north-west, is the only municipality on the Italian mainland where motor vehicles do not circulate. You get there by cable car from Buisson, climbing some 700 metres, on foot along the old mule track, or by landing a small plane on the village airstrip. Just over a hundred people live up there, with no traffic lights, no parking lots and no engine noise.

The Italy that lies south of Tunis

Italy's southernmost point belongs to the municipality of Lampedusa e Linosa, in the Sicilian province of Agrigento: the island of Lampedusa sits at latitude 35 degrees 30 minutes north, further south than Algiers, Tunis and Valletta. Sicily's coast is 210 kilometres away, Africa's only 152. And geology backs up the map: Lampedusa and the nearby islet of Lampione rest on the African plate, the only Italian territories that geographically stand in Africa, not in Europe.
