The town carries a wife's name. In 1610 Giuseppe Paternò obtained from Philip III the licence to populate his fief and founded a town there, calling it Mirabella in honour of Eleonora Mirabella, whom he had married fifteen years earlier.
The site, though, was unhealthy, there was malaria, and in 1630 his son obtained permission to move the town. Piazza objected, because it lost tax revenue: it took six years of litigation and two hundred onze to the Giurati to settle the matter. Imbaccari is older and more obscure: some link it to Imachara, a Sicanian town mentioned by Cicero. There are 5,191 residents.

Mirabella Imbaccari celebrates Saint Joseph on 19 March; the town's real patronal feast, however, is that of Our Lady of Grace, always held on the last Sunday of August, moved in recent years to the second-to-last to make it easier for emigrants to attend.
