The town's arms are a family album: they gather the symbols of four houses that passed the lordship of Gualtieri between them — the Gavarretta, the Marino, the Graffeo and the Avarna, the last of whom owned the baronial palace.
The town lies inland from Milazzo, among citrus groves, olives and vines that give the Mamertino. The torrent runs down through narrow gorges in a series of drops: the finest are the Cataolo falls, reached on foot. In the village stands the Ponte Vecchio, from the fifteenth century, and in May they hold the orange sagra. There are 1,834 residents.
