Milazzo

Province: Messina · Region: Sicily · Population: 32,146 · Postal code: 98057

Milazzo is the gateway to the Aeolians — hydrofoils for the seven sisters sail from its port — but leaving without climbing to the citadel means missing one of Sicily's largest fortified complexes: the "walled town" with castle, old cathedral and Spanish ramparts. Here in July 1860 Garibaldi won the battle that opened his road to Messina.

The Milazzo cape stretches the town into the Tyrrhenian, out to the Pool of Venus — a natural basin below the lighthouse — and the sanctuary of Saint Anthony. Swordfish "alla ghiotta" recalls that here the sea is a trade before it is a holiday.
