Caccamo

Province: Palermo · Region: Sicily · Population: 8,295 · Postal code: 90012

In the castle of Caccamo there is a room called the Hall of the Conspiracy: there Matteo Bonello took refuge after having admiral Maio killed and stirring the nobles against William I. The fortress held out against the king's assaults, but in the end Bonello was taken by a trick, blinded and left to die in a cell.

Below the town, in the artificial lake of Rosamarina, lies the bridge of 1307 that led to Palermo: it reappears when the water drops. In the catacombs under the church of the Souls of Purgatory, meanwhile, the people of Caccamo had themselves buried in niches until 1863. The town stands at 521 metres, below Monte San Calogero; there are 8,295 residents.
