The patrons of Caccamo are Blessed Giovanni Liccio, Saint Nicasius the martyr and Saint George, celebrated on the Monday of the last week of May. The cathedral of San Giorgio Martire, dating from 1090, is the town's most important church; among the other religious buildings is the church of San Nicasio.
Under the reign of Federico Chiaramonte, Caccamo experienced one of the most important periods in its history: the town enjoyed many liberties, was enriched with new monuments, and the castle, which had already proven impregnable even during the assaults of King William I, was enlarged and fortified with a new circuit of walls in an architectural layout in the distinctive «Chiaramontano» style. In 1641 the lord of Caccamo, Don Giovanni Alfonso Henriquez de Cabrera, Grand Admiral of Castile, was appointed viceroy of Sicily; on 12 November 1643 he raised Caccamo to the rank of city, restoring the title of «urbs generosissima» granted to it centuries earlier by Emperor Frederick II and conferring on it all the honours and privileges of the kingdom's other cities.
