Every 10 May Gangi honours its patron saint: solemn mass with the town authorities, the mayor's floral tribute, and a procession that calls at the town's churches.
Exactly 80 kilometers southeast of Palermo, Gangi holds a spot on the official list of "The most beautiful villages of Italy." The town straddles the rugged terrain of the Madonie mountains in central Sicily, sharing borders with communities across both the Palermo and Enna provinces.
Currently home to around 7,000 residents, the settlement neighbors other mountain outposts like Geraci Siculo, Petralia Soprana, and Sperlinga. Approaching the area requires navigating winding inland roads, offering a distinct alternative to the typical coastal Sicilian circuits.
Fun facts about Gangi
In 2014 Gangi beat towns from all over the country to be crowned “Borgo dei borghi”, the RAI television contest for Italy's most beautiful villages. Its one-euro houses added to the fame: the town hall handed over empty homes in the historic centre for a symbolic price to buyers who pledged to restore them, and applications arrived from well beyond Italy.
Beneath the Mother Church lies the “fossa dei parrini”, a crypt where the town's priests were mummified between 1728 and 1871. Dozens of bodies in clerical dress still line the wall niches, some fitted with wax funeral masks.
“Lo Zoppo di Gangi” — the Cripple of Gangi — was not one painter but two: Giuseppe Salerno and Gaspare Vazzano both signed with the same nickname, and both were born here between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Salerno's Last Judgement of 1629, openly modelled on Michelangelo's, hangs in the Mother Church.

For three days in April, Gangi's Foro Boario pairs a farming and livestock fair with a festival built around Madonie wild boar: tastings with live music, cattle contests and cheese-making demos.

Feast of the Holy Spirit
📅 Every year on the Monday after Pentecost, between late May and June
On the Monday after Pentecost, some forty statues of saints are carried on shoulders through Gangi to the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, ending with ritual runs across the churchyard.
