San Mauro stands at 1,050 metres, and yet it has a beach of its own: it is one of the few comuni in Italy to sit so high and still reach the sea. From the Timpa del Grillo, where three provinces meet, you can count thirty-two towns, islands included.
The name comes from a relic of Saint Maurus, given — tradition says — by the Benedictines who lived here. «Castelverde», on the other hand, dates from 1863: there were twenty-two other San Mauros in Italy, and the prefecture asked for a second name. Of the castle a few walls remain at the top; the Ventimiglia held it from 1296 until the end of feudal times. There are 1,847 residents.
