In the arms there is a golden lily on a red field, and beneath it the words Lilium Petrae: the lily of the rock, which is said to be the origin of the name. Petra was a Roman town already mentioned by Cicero, and the Arabs called it Batarliah.
The geographer Idrisi describes it as a walled town beneath a crag, with water in abundance, a market, a castle, a church and a mosque: different people living together. In the treasury of the mother church there is still a bronze candelabrum from that time. The town spreads between 900 and 1,100 metres on the southern side of the Madonie, and the park has its headquarters here. There are 2,975 residents.

Petralia Sottana celebrates Saint Calogerus on 17 and 18 June, after a week of preparation known as the settina; the saint's heavy float, weighing 1,800 kilograms, is carried up the town's steep streets without the confraternities, because it is a feast of the people.
