High in the mountain range of the Madonie Regional Natural Park, Petralia Sottana occupies a vantage point in the Metropolitan City of Palermo. The town currently records a population of 2,975 residents.
Its high-altitude setting reached international movie audiences in 2006, when director Emanuele Crialese chose Petralia as the point of departure for the protagonist family in his migration drama Nuovomondo.
