Feast of the Holy Spirit

📍 Gangi · Palermo · Sicily

On the Monday after Pentecost, some forty statues of saints are carried on shoulders through Gangi to the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, ending with ritual runs across the churchyard.

Gangi's biggest religious day falls on the Monday after Pentecost. Once the novena ends, around forty statues of saints leave the Mother Church and cross the town on the bearers' shoulders — men carry some, women others such as Saint Rita, teenagers and even children the rest, each statue assigned by long custom to its own group.

At the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit comes the part the crowd waits for: “i Miracula” and “a cursa di Santi”, when the heavy statues are run three times across the churchyard before entering the church and bowing to the image of the Holy Spirit. The 2025 celebration, on 8 and 9 June, drew thousands of faithful from across Sicily.
