Resting on the 613-meter slopes of Monte d'Oro, Montelepre is inextricably linked to the infamous post-war Sicilian bandit Salvatore Giuliano. Yet this Palermo community of roughly 6,400 residents holds a much wider array of cultural connections than its most notorious native suggests.
Beyond local history, the municipality produced the prominent architect Rosario Candela. It also serves as the unexpected ancestral home of entertainer and US congressman Sonny Bono, whose father Santo was born in the town before ultimately emigrating to America.
