For four centuries the town belonged to the Tomasi di Lampedusa, the family that would give Italy the author of The Leopard. Their palace, which began as a baronial castle, stood at the top of the village: it was lost in 1954, and in its place there is now a belvedere over the Tyrrhenian.
Torretta was founded in 1599 by the nobleman Arrigo Traina and became a comune only in 1820; the name probably comes from a little tower. It sits in the mountains above Palermo, lives on olives, and the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie holds a museum of sacred art. There are 4,141 residents.

Torretta celebrates Saint Calogerus on 18 June; the hermit monk, who died on Monte Kronio in 561, is venerated as a wonder-working saint by both the Catholic and Orthodox churches and is patron or particularly venerated in many Sicilian towns, from Naro to Sciacca, from Favara to Mussomeli.
