On 11 May 1860 Garibaldi landed here with his Thousand, and Marsala entered the history books. It had entered the world's glasses back in 1773, when Englishman John Woodhouse discovered that the local wine, fortified, survived sea voyages: Marsala wine was born, and the historic cellars — Florio above all — still welcome visitors.
Beneath the city lies Lilybaeum, the ancient Carthaginian stronghold, with its seaside archaeological park. To the north, the Stagnone salt pans with their windmills and the island of Mozia serve Sicily's most photographed sunsets, migrating flamingos included.
