Cassaro is the smallest comune in the Syracuse area, and its name says what once stood here: from the Arabic qasr, which in turn comes from the Latin castrum, the castle. The castle and the old town were brought down by the earthquake of 1693, and the town was rebuilt elsewhere.
The fief passed from the di Cassaro to the de Muleto, the Siracusa, the Gaetani: it was Cesare Gaetani, in 1631, who became prince of Cassaro. Today the town fills up at Easter, when on Good Friday they hold the scisa 'â cruci and on Sunday, in the square, the risen Christ and the Madonna meet: they call it u Scontru. There are 813 residents.

In Cassaro the feast of the patron saint is celebrated on the last Sunday of July, but the honoree changes every year: Saint Joseph, Saint Sebastian and Saint Anthony take turns, each with his own church in the small Iblean village.
