Borgo d'Anaunia

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 2,512 · Postal code: 38013

Borgo d'Anaunia was born on the first of January 2020 from the merger of Castelfondo, Fondo and Malosco; it is a comune sparso and the town hall is at Fondo. The most surprising thing about it, though, lies inside a census: in 2021 five hundred and five people of this comune — one resident in five — declared that they belonged to the Ladin linguistic group. This is the Val di Non, which is not one of the valleys people think of when they think of Ladin, and yet a fifth of the inhabitants call themselves so.

Each of the villages that make up the comune brought its own along. There are three castles: that of Castelfondo, Castel Malosco and the castle of Vasio. There are five parish churches: San Martino at Fondo, San Nicolò at Castelfondo, Santa Tecla at Malosco, Sant'Anna at Tret and Sant'Antonio at Dovena, besides the church of Santa Lucia just outside Fondo. In the territory there are a canyon cut by the rio Sass and a lake they call the Emerald. And then there is a third stretch of water, the lake of Santa Maria, which everybody calls the lake of Tret after the hamlet standing beside it — except that the lake lies in the territory of another comune, Senale-San Felice.
