Cavareno

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,037 · Postal code: 38011

In the parish church of the next village there is a small Roman altar of red limestone with an inscription that some read as «to the lord god Cavavius»: nobody knows where it was found, and there is no proof that it has anything to do with Cavareno. But the likeness between that name and their own pleased the villagers so much that in 1928, having to make themselves a coat of arms, they put a Roman altar on it.

The charter that ruled the community, the Charta della Regola, survives in a copy of 1632, and every August the village dresses up as a medieval borough to celebrate it. In that same 1928 four neighbouring places were attached to Cavareno: they left again in the fifties, and Seio in 1964 after a vote. On the square, on the bell tower of the old church, the clock made in 1890 is still running.
