Ronzone

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 391 · Postal code: 38010

The village you see today was rebuilt from scratch: towards the end of the nineteenth century a fire destroyed it, and nothing certain is known of its origins. It stands high above the Val di Non, where people call it Renzón, and at the last census more than one resident in seven declared themselves Ladin. Between 1909 and 1934 the tramway that climbed from Dermulo to Fondo and the Mendola pass had a halt here, and it was not named after the village: it was called Belvedere.

What Ronzone counts for, though, begins in 1976: the first orienteering map in Italy was drawn here, and the first Italian championships in the sport were run here. For a discipline that consists of reading the ground with a map and a compass, the birth certificate is a map, and that map portrays this stretch of mountain. Its municipal autonomy, on the other hand, it had lost in 1928, when it was merged into Cavareno, and won back in 1952.
