Calceranica al Lago

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,305 · Postal code: 38050

The name, legend says, comes from an encounter: a man who went about baptising villages met a peasant coming up from the lake with a stocking full of frogs, el g'ha na calza de rane, and the village was called that. In the church of Sant'Ermete, built over a small temple of Diana, the votive altar to the goddess is set into the wall: Mommsen recorded it in the corpus of Latin inscriptions.

In May 1916 the Austrians placed a large-calibre naval gun here, the Lange Georg, to shell by surprise the Italian command on the Asiago plateau: its range covered the twenty-five kilometres between them. The village also has a restless administrative history: merged into Caldonazzo in 1928, a comune again in 1947, and since 1957 it has been called Calceranica al Lago.
