Altopiano della Vigolana

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 4,802 · Postal code: 38049

The comune was born from the referendum of the seventh of June 2015 among the voters of Bosentino, Centa San Nicolò, Vattaro and Vigolo Vattaro, but this perimeter had existed before: between 1928 and 1947, under the fascist regime's merger campaign, the four villages found themselves under a single podestà, and then it was undone. What had been imposed was later chosen. Pending an official emblem, the comune uses a shield that simply puts the four old coats of arms together, in alphabetical order.

The villages of the plateau stand on the Roman road linking the Valsugana with the Adige valley, and they paid for it: armies passed through, and Vigolo Vattaro was sacked in a Trentino revolt. From 1020 to 1801 they were under the prince-bishopric of Trent, and in the Middle Ages German settlers established themselves here — at Centa above all — of whom many surnames still survive. In the parish church of Vigolo Vattaro there is an early Christian relief, perhaps older than the seventh century, showing an olive tree with birds. On the fourth of May 1945 retreating German soldiers killed seven partisans at Vattaro: a plaque remembers them.
